HOBE SOUND, Fla. October 20, 2006) -- Deron Zendt applied his considerable local knowledge Friday at McArthur Gold Club to post a two under par 70 and win the seventh annual Tournament of Champions conducted by the Palm Beach County Golf Association.

Zendt, 28, an assistant golf course superintendent at McArthur, scored five birdies, two bogies and a double bogey at the par-four seventh hole. "It hit it at No. 7 where I always hit it on that hole, in the water," on the inside of the dogleg, Zendt said.

"Sure, I get to play here a lot," Zendt added, "and I'm grateful for the opportunity and for the encouragement from the people here to play. But other than the seventh hole, there wasn't much exciting. It was pretty much a straightforward round." He birdied Nos. 10, 17, 1, 2, 4 and 5 and bogied the 12th and 18th holes.

Zendt qualified for the Tournament of Champions by winning the Palm Beach County Mid-Amateur last month. His second victory of the year likely clinched a spot on the PBCGA's team for the Smidt Cup matches against Southeast Chapter pros, scheduled Dec. 4 at The Fox Club in Palm City.

Tied for second at 71 Friday were R.J. Nakashian, who has already clinched Player of the Year honors after winning four PBCGA tournaments this season, and Senior Better Ball champion Tim Cox. Nakashian had three birdies and two bogies, Cox two birdies and one bogey.

Sixteen of the 20 eligible players competed.

Next on the PBCGA tournament schedule: Oct. 27-29, Senior Four-Ball, PGA National-Estate, and Nov. 18, Diamond Myst Finale Four-Ball, PGA National-General.
