ST. AUGUSTINE, Florida — (Oct 20, 2006) Brad Valois, of Warwick, RI and Peter Uihlein, of Bradenton, FL fired a 3 -under-par 67 to tie the lead by two strokes after the first round of the St. Augustine Amateur today at the St. Johns Golf Club.

"Today was a wonderfully boring day for me." said Uihlein. That is, straight on the fairways and greens without so much as having to look for the ball. Considering the strong winds at the course today, it was quite an accomplishment. The highlight of his round was an eagle two at #15 after driving the green on the par 4.

Brad Valois’ round was also a model of consistency with 4 birdies and a single bogey. He is a sophomore at Johnson & Wales University in Miami. He had a top ten finish in the Northeast Amateur this year and is currently the reigning New England and Rhode Island State Amateur Champion.

Elliott LaVercombe, the Executive Director of the St. Johns County First Tee, is doing double duty this week. He also serves on the tournament's Board of Directors. LaVercombe, of St. Augustine, FL, is in third place after a 1-under-par 69.

"I feel pretty good about today's play. Anytime you can shoot under par is a good day," says LaVercombe.

The tournament's long drive contest was held this afternoon. Keith Nagy, age 48, of Jacksonville, Florida won with a drive of 356 yards and beat a lot of players younger than he. Michael Barbosa of St. Petersburg, Florida finished second after a 354 yard drive, and Thomas Murray of Orange Park, Florida came in third with a drive of 344.

Now in its third year, the St. Augustine Amateur has quickly become a premier event on the golf calendar. This year, for the first time, the tournament will award Golfweek/Titleist men's amateur ranking points, with the winner earning 20, and runner-up 15.

The tournament is 54 holes with its final round Sunday, Ostober 22, 2006.
