KANSAS CITY, MO (May 15, 2016) - Five matches, five wins and 20-seed Craig Broswick is the 2016 Kansas City Match Play champion. Broswick survived two tight matches on Sunday to emerge from a field of 32 at Swope Memorial Golf Course.
In the semifinals Broswick outlasted top-seed Michael Greene in 22 holes to advance to the finals. Greene held a 2 up lead after 15 holes but Broswick was able to claw his way back into the match winning the 16th and then in a must win situation the 18th hole. After three halves Broswick finally closed the door, winning on the fourth extra hole and surviving the longest match of the tournament.
Some might have expected Broswick to be out of gas after the marathon match but he still had enough in the tank to defeat 10-seed Jackson Foth 2&1 in the finals. The championship match seesawed back-and-forth and was all-square until Broswick took the lead for good on the 13th hole. He then pushed the lead to 2 up with a win on No. 16 and following a halve on 17 the championship was his.
Foth reached the championship match on the heels of a 5&4 win over No. 22 Jeff Mason.
