MARSHALLTOWN, IA (May 13, 2016) - Josh Black has snagged the first round lead at the 2016 Iowa Mid-Amateur at Elmwood Country Club. Black opened with a first round 5-under 65 and leads Justin Schulte by 3-strokes.

Black from Oelwein tallied five birdies and an eagle on the day. Most of his damage was done on the front side with birdies on 1, 4, 5, 7 and an eagle on the par-4 8th. He did bogey two holes on the opening nine but still opened in 4-under 31. On his way in Black picked up an additional birdie on No. 13 to polish off his 65.

"I hit good shots," Josh Black told the IGA. "You can’t get too aggressive get above the hole here. My hole out on No. 8 was lucky, but it was a good shot regardless if it went in. I just tried to play smart. This is a good golf course for me. It was fun. I got in some good practice before (this event), that never hurts. We’ll try and do it again tomorrow."

Top mid-amateur players Mike McCoy and Gene Elliott share third at 1-under and are four back. Jon Olson, the two-time defending champion is currently 3-over in a tie for 13th after an opening day 73.

In the Senior Division Gary Ellis of Norwalk paces the field as the only player under-par at 1-under. Ron Peterson and Matt Weresh are 1-over sharing second place.
