TAMPA, Fla. (September 30, 2006) – Tommy Dudley upset number one seed Steve Carter in 20 holes to advance to the semifinals of the 25th Mid-Amateur Championship at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto. The two semifinal matches will be played Sunday morning with the final match beginning at 1:00 pm.
In the upper half of the bracket, Tommy Dudley, of Jacksonville, defeated top seed and stroke play medalist Steve Carter in 20 holes. Carter, of Jacksonville, the 2004 Mid-Amateur Champion, earned stroke play medalist honors for the third straight year. Dudley, the eighth seed, will now face Noi Chay, of Land O’ Lakes. Chay won his first two matches 2 and 1 and then beat Patrick Olive, of Holiday, in the quarterfinals 1 up. The lower half of the bracket features Darryl Osler playing Bret Voisin in the semifinal match. Osler, from Boca Raton, defeated defending Champion Jon Veneziano, from Mount Dora, 1 up. The 10th seed Osler beat 2005 Senior Player of the Year Rick Woulfe, of Fort Lauderdale, in the first round 2 up. The final semifinalist Bret Voisin, of Orlando, topped Ken Dawson, of Merritt Island, 5 and 4. Voisin lost in the finals of last year’s Mid-Amateur Championship.
