CHEVY CHASE, Maryland (Oct 1, 2006) -- The 100th Middle Atlantic Amateur championship conducted at the Chevy Chase Club turned out to be two tournaments in one, and Ki Moon, from Ellicott City, won the one that mattered on Sunday (October 1). Moon, who just turned 22, took a three-stroke lead into the final nine and closed with a 1-over-par 71, and a 72-hole total of 281 at the Chevy Chase Club. Keith Snyder, 21, who had jumped into a tie for the lead with a third-round 66 on Saturday (September 30), wound up second with 73-283.

After three days of cool, rainy weather that wound up forcing a suspension of play on Thursday and Friday (September 29-30), the final round was played on a glorious fall day with 62 players having made the halfway cut at 156. With a course of 6,814 yards playing to a par of 35-35--70, Moon ended 66-75-69-71--281, and Snyder, a fifth-year engineering student at Drexel University, 71-73-66-73--283.

Kevin Vollmer, 20, a Montgomery College sophomore, vaulted past Terry Burke, third after 54 holes, to lead what amounted to the second division of the event with 77-74-68-71--290. The seven-shot margin was the same as co-leaders Moon and Snyder held on Burke after three rounds. Burke ended 75-72-70-74--291.

"I hit a lot of good shots [in the final round]," Moon said. "I think the back nine is easier than the front," but he still knew he had to be careful. As it deveoped, Moon, who birdied the second and sixth holes, and bogeyed the ninth, turned in 1-under 34. Snyder, on the other hand, struggled on holes 7-8-9, bogeying two of them and turning in 37. On the return trip, Moon birdied only the 14th and added three bogeys for 37, while Snyder bogeyed the 16th for 36.

"Coming out, I thought I'd have to shoot low, because he wasn't going to give me much," Snyder said. "I hit some 'loose' iron shots on 7-8-9, and just threw some shots away . . . and he made a lot of good shots."

Vollmer admitted to getting off to a weak start Thursday (77), but knew the course suited his game. "You hit good shots, you get rewarded, and I did that for most of the week, " he said. His 68-71 was the best weekend score. Moon had the low first round, 66; Braxton Hunter, from Rockford, Tenn., the low second, and the only one to break 70, with 69; Snyder, with 66, the low third, and Jimmy Delp, from Falmouth, Va., won for the final round on a match of cards at 71. Will Shriver, from Silver Spring, had the best back-nine numbers for the weekend with 32 and 34. The course played at par 70 and 6,814 yards. Future Middle Atlantic Amateurs are slated for Congressional (2007), Belle Haven (2008), Four Streams (2009), and Columbia (2010).
