FSGA Mid-Amateur: Carter Takes Medal

TAMPA, Fla. (Spetmepber 29, 2006) – Steve Carter fired a two-round 5-under par 139 to earn medalist honors in the 25th Mid-Amateur Championship at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto. Carter secures the number one seed as 32 players have advanced to match play.

The 2004 Mid-Amateur Champion Steve Carter, of Jacksonville, looks to win another title after topping the field of 90 in stroke play qualifying. Playing the Quarry Course, Carter blasted rounds of 69-70 to earn the number one seed in match play. This is the third straight year that Carter has won the stroke play portion of the Mid-Amateur. Last year, Carter lost to eventual Champion Jon Veneziano in the semifinals. Veneziano, from Mount Dora, took second in stroke play shooting a 69-72—141 at Black Diamond. Two-time Public Links Champion Robert Parker, of Sanford, and Edward Kenny, from Lake Worth, each posted a two-round total of 145. In a playoff for the final match play spot, Paul Irvin, of Belleview, chipped in from 75 feet to birdie the first playoff hole and claim the final qualifying spot. Irvin will face Carter in the first round of match play Friday afternoon. The first round of match play will be completed Friday afternoon. The second round and quarterfinals will play on Saturday with the semifinals and finals on Sunday.

To be eligible for the State Mid-Amateur, participants must be 25 years of age or older. More than 570 entries were received for this year’s Championship setting a new record for entries filed. Participants qualified in an 18-hole stroke play format to advance to the Championship. The Championship consists of 36-holes of stroke play qualifying over the first two days with the low 32 advancing to the match play on Saturday and Sunday.
