FSGA Mid-Amateur: Two Share Round 1 Lead

TAMPA, Fla. (September 28, 2006) – Past Mid-Amateur Champions Jon Veneziano and Steve Carter each fired a 3-under par 69 on the Quarry Course at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto to share the first round lead in the 25th Mid-Amateur Championship. The Championship will continue with a 9:00 am shotgun tomorrow, September 29 with the low 32 advancing to match play through the weekend.

Defending Champion Jon Veneziano, of Mount Dora, and the 2004 Champion Steve Carter, of Jacksonville, posted a 69 to top the field of 90 by two strokes. Both Veneziano and Carter were selected to represent Florida in the Southeastern Challenge Matches in October. In July, Veneziano won the Public Links Championship. Four players recorded a 71 including the 2006 Four-Ball Champion Edward Kenny, of Lake Worth. Kenny paired with Paul Melson to win the Four-Ball Championship and also placed second in this year’s Amateur Championship. Four players shot even par in the first round to be three back from the leaders. Two-time Public Links Champion Robert Parker, of Sanford, posted a 72 as he goes for his third State title.

To be eligible for the State Mid-Amateur, participants must be 25 years of age or older. More than 570 entries were received for this year’s Championship setting a new record for entries filed. Participants qualified in an 18-hole stroke play format to advance to the Championship. The Championship consists of 36-holes of stroke play qualifying over the first two days with the low 32 advancing to the match play on Saturday and Sunday.
