PINEHURST, NC (March 13, 2016)--Xavier had a ten stroke lead after the second day of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate but had to hold on for dear life during the final round.
The Musketeers, picked up their first team win of the year, trailed Elon at one point during the final round but rallied to post the winning total of 878. Elon finished one back at 879 while Marshall rounded out the top three posting a three day total of 880.
On a difficult Pinehurst No. 8, sophomore Jose Montano (2-over) finished third overall to pace Xavier. Montano led the event coming into the final day but struggled shooting a 3-over 74. It was the 2015 Big East Freshman of the Year's only round over par for the tournament.
Freshman Daniel Wetterich (6-over) finished in a tie for seventh. Wetterich began the day at even-par and in second place. Like Montano, Wetterich struggled a bit in the final round with a 6-over 77.
"To win at Pinehurst is special, so it was great," Montano said speaking to school representation following the round. "It wasn't the finish I wanted individually, but it's a good feeling to win this event as a team. There's so much history here and it's great to be a part of it."
In the individual competition Morehead State University's, Will Branham (even-par), claimed the title. Branham, a senior, moved up from fourth place at the beginning of the day to earn his first win of the year. His previous best finish this season had been a tie for eighth at the Stetson Intercollegiate in February.
Branham, started on the ninth hole, and picked up his first of three birdies on the day at No. 12. He gave a stroke back a couple holes later before carding two more birdies on his way to a round of 2-under 69.
"I am so incredibly happy for Will (Branham)," Morehead State University head coach Matthew Martin told school representation following the round. "To finish at even-par for the tournament, on this golf course, is something special. His approach to the game right now is flawless. It was beautiful to watch."
Ball State's Johnny Watts (1-over) finished in second. Along with Xavier's Montano who finished third it was Elon's Jonathan DiIanni (3-over) and Scott Barnhart (4-over) of Belmont rounding out the top 5.
