FORT WORTH – Despite early morning rain, and strong winds throughout the day, China’s Pone Pyae Han leads the Texas Cup Invitational at Mira Vista Country Club after carding a 3-under-par 68 in the first round to lead by one.

After being 3-over through his first four holes, Han managed to find his groove after the par-4, 4th, which turned out to be his final bogey on the day.

The 16-year-old from Panyu, China went on to birdie three of his next five holes to make the turn at even-par. Han’s impeccable ball striking continued as he made three more birdies on the back nine, two of which came on par-3s. Finishing at 3-under for the par-3s, and on the day, Han holds a one-stroke lead over Travis McInroe of Plano.

McInroe made a single bogey on the par-3, 3rd hole before finishing his round with three birdies to shoot a 2-under 69.

Pierceson Coody of Plano, Brendan Powers of Mansfield, and Trevor Brown of Austin all sit one shot behind McInroe in a tie for third at 1-under 70, with six players in a tie for sixth at even-par 71.

Ranked by both Golfweek and Junior Golf Scoreboard, the Texas Cup Invitational offers players a chance to earn exemptions into future Legends Junior Tour events as well as stars towards the AJGA’s Performance Based Entry. The winner of the Texas Cup will become fully exempt with the AJGA while the top-15 players will earn at least four performance stars.

The field of 78 also features six players who played in the 2015 U.S. Junior Amateur at Colleton River Plantation Club in South Carolina.

This is the third straight year that Mira Vista Country Club has hosted the Texas Cup. Opened in 1987, the par-71 golf course was designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish and can be stretched out to just over 7,000 yards, making it a true test for this skilled competition. Mira Vista also hosted the 1994 Texas Amateur and the 2000 Texas Mid-Amateur.
