BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Oct. 6, 2015) -- For the fourth consecutive year and the eighth time in the last 10 years, the No. 16 Alabama men's golf team has won the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. The Crimson Tide blistered the field by shooting a 19-under par 821 (278-268-275), while junior Robby Shelton claimed medalist honors with an 11-under par 199 (66-64-69).

“I am just really excited for our team to win this event,” Alabama head coach Jay Seawell said.

“We have come very close to winning this fall and just haven’t been able to get over the hump. We learned from that, had some clutch play and ended up winning this tournament. I am just very pleased with our team from top to bottom and hope this gives us momentum moving forward.”

Alabama’s team total of 812 ranks as the sixth-lowest 54-hole score in program history. Meanwhile, Shelton’s tournament total of 199 is a career-low mark, the third-lowest in Alabama school history and ranks as the second-lowest 54-hole score in the 30 years of the JPNI.

Furthermore, Shelton has now claimed back-to-back medalist honors after winning the Dick’s Sporting Goods Collegiate Cup last weekend. Shelton, who defeated Auburn’s Michael Johnson (200) by one stroke to claim the JPNI title, became the first Alabama player to win medalist honors at the Jerry Pate since former Alabama great and current PGA player Justin Thomas won the title in 2013. He joins the likes of other PGA players such as Michael Thompson, Bud Cauley, Hunter Mahan, Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth, Rory Sabbatini and D.J. Trahan as past medalist winners.

“I am really happy with my performance this week,” Shelton said. “I struck the ball well and felt good out on the course. I think the entire team played great all week and this was definitely and team victory.”

Shelton was not the only Crimson Tide golfer to perform well, as senior captain Tom Lovelady also set a 54-hole personal best score with a 6-under par 204 (70-65-69) to place third overall. It was his fourth top-five finish in his career and ninth top-10 result.

Sophomore Steven Setterstrom, playing in just his fifth career tournament, carded a career-best round of 3-under par 67 during Tuesday’s final 18 holes. He also set a new career-low mark with a 1-under par 209 (72-70-67) and tied for 11th-place overall, besting his previous career-best finish of 56th set during his freshman season.Freshman Davis Riley tied for 20th to give Alabama four golfers among the top 20, closing play with a 2-over par 212 (73-69-70). Sophomore Tyler Hitchner rounded out the Tide in 33rd position with a 6-over par 216 (70-72-74) on the par 70, 7,209-yard Old Overton course.

Alabama bested No. 23 Florida (826) by five strokes to claim the title, while No. 3 Auburn (827) placed third overall. Florida State (833), the top-ranked team in the nation, finished fourth, while Arkansas (846) rounded out the top five.

Alabama will next close out its fall season at the 2015 Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational on Nov. 2-4 in Kauai, Hawaii.
