CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — On a 36-hole first day at the UNC Finley Golf Course, Nick Stafford and Toks Pedro fired five-under par totals of 139 to lead by two going into the final day at the East Coast Amateur.
Stafford, a senior at Belmont Abbey College in his hometown of Belmont, N.C., shot 72 in the morning before going low for 67 in the afternoon — the lowest score of the tournament thus far.
Tied with him through two rounds is the Rutgers University sophomore Pedro, a native of Nigeria. Pedro is the only player to have posted two under par rounds, carding 70 and 69 on Tuesday.
Amarin Kraivixien trails the two leaders by two, much in part to a four-under 68 in the afternoon that pushed him to three-under total. The native of Bangkok, Thailand will attend Campbell University this fall.
Morning leader John Thatch, who shot 69, struggled to a 77 in the afternoon and dropped back to two-over — eighth place.
Wednesday's final round will conclude the 54-hole event.
