First Round of Match Play Concludes at Missouri Amateur

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (June 25, 2015) -- Missouri’s top amateur golfers have gathered to take on the Buffalo Ridge Springs Golf Course in the 108th Missouri State Amateur Championship. After 36 holes of stroke play to determine seeding, a round of 64 match play has begun and 32 players remain.
Brevin Giebler, a native of Cape Girardea, Mo., earned the number one overall seed with rounds of 68 and 67 for a stroke play total of 5-under. Giebler continued his strong play in his first round match, earning a 2-up victory against Greg Sanborn of Ellisville, Mo. Giebler’s round of 32 matchup against Griffen Locke will be the first one up Friday at 8am local time.
Other notable players to advance to the round of 32 include the champion of the past two years, Joey Johnson of Ozark, Mo. Johnson is a recent graduate of Missouri State and is poised to make another deep run at this year’s championship. Johnson was all square with his opponent Matt Echelmeier going into the 13th hole when he reeled off an impressive four straight birdies to close the match on the 16th hole, 3-and-2.
Joining Johnson as another player to keep an eye on is Wilson Sundvold of Columbia, Mo. The rising senior at the University of Missouri earned the #3 overall seed with stroke play rounds of 69 and 67. Sundvold kept his strong play going in his first round match with five birdies and a 3-and-2 victory against Patrick Britt of St. Louis, Mo.
The round of 32 takes place Friday morning followed immediately by the round of 16 in the afternoon. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played on Saturday, with the 36-hole championship match decided on Sunday.
