SYRACUSE, NY (June 5, 2015) Everyone has their off days, but the mark of a true champion is having the ability to overcome the difficulties. Defending champion Kevin VandenBerg of Fayetteville, NY has done just that to take a big lead in the 59th Post-Standard Amateur.
"It was a mess today," VandenBerg told Syracuse.com. "My speed was off all day on the greens. I didn't have a good rhythm with my swing. I was off today. With the game I had I'm pleased to be at 72." Overall, VandenBerg is at -4 (211) after three days of this 72-hole tournament.
Lack of focus led to two bogeys and a double bogey on the short 5th hole, a 318-yard par-4. He showed his resolve with four birdies on the day, including sinking a long putt from the fringe on 16.
2013 Champion John Clare, 19, is tied for second with Cicero’s Brad Monroe at 2-over par (217) with the final round to go. Clare was in a similar position with VandenBerg back in 2013. VandenBerg held a one shot lead over Clare going into the final round at Drumlins Golf Club, but faltered and finished in seventh place as Clare went on to become champ.
