Florida State Match Play: Finals set for Sunday
OCALA, FLORIDA (August 12, 2006) -- Cameron Knight upset defending Champion Kelly Gosse to advance to the finals of the Florida State Amateur Match Play Championship. Knight will face Brent Dorman in the finals tomorrow Sunday, August 13 at 8:45 am at the Country Club of Ocala.

In the Championship flight, Cameron Knight, of Dade City, beat Darin Green, of Brandon, 2 up in the quarterfinals to play top seed Kelly Gosse in the semifinals. Gosse, of Inverness, was 2 up at the turn and then Knight, an incoming freshman at Florida State University, rebounded to lead by one through 16. Gosse birdied the 17th hole and both players bogeyed 18 to take the match to extra holes. Knight won the match on the 19th hole draining a six foot putt for birdie as Gosse’s putt lipped out. Knight, the 2003-2004 Florida Junior Tour (FJT) Player-of-the-Year, is up against the two-time Country Club of Ocala Club Champion Brent Dorman in the finals. Dorman advanced to the semifinals after winning his quarterfinal match making birdie on the 20th hole. Playing Marc Dull, of Winter Haven, in the semifinals, Dorman controlled the match after making a great up and down on the 10th hole and chipping in for birdie on the 11th hole to go 3 up and win the match 3 and 2.

In the first flight, 16th seed Doug Snoap, of Apopka, made his way to the finals upsetting the top seed Jim Hammons, of Port Orange, in the first round 1 up. Snoap then won his quarterfinal and semifinal matches to face Marais Lombard, of Pompano Beach, in the finals. Andy Green, of Valrico, is up against John Hewlin, of Bradenton, in the second flight final match while top seed Ken Godwin, of Ocala, will play Nicholas Pincket, of Davie, the seventh seed, in the finals of the third flight. Two Ocala men, Bill Wright and David Arnold will play each other in the final match of the fourth flight.

The Match Play Championship takes a field of 96 players to make up five flights. All players were guaranteed an 18-hole seeding round and at least one round of match play. After the seeding round, the field was broken into a Championship flight of 32 players and four additional flights of 16 players. A winner will be decided in each of the five flights.

All non-exempt competitors played an 18-hole stroke play seeding round on Thursday, August 10 to determine their flights. Players earned exempt status by one of three categories, 2005 Mid-Amateur Champion, 2006 State Amateur Champion or 2005 Match Play Semifinalists. All five flights began the match play competition on Friday, August 11 with the Championship flight also playing in the afternoon. All flights played two matches on Saturday, August 12 with the finals on the morning of Sunday, August 13.
