GOSSE ADVANCES TO MATCH PLAY QUARTERS

TAMPA, Fla. (August 11, 2006) -– In a battle of past Champions, Kelly Gosse defeated Andy Purnell to advance to the quarterfinals of the Florida State Amateur Match Play Championship. Matches continue through Sunday, August 13 at the Country Club of Ocala.

In the Championship flight, defending Champion and top seed Kelly Gosse, of Inverness, beat Philip Meng, of Orlando, 2 up in the round of 32. Gosse then defeated 2003 Match Play Champion Andy Purnell, of Jacksonville, 4 and 3 to secure his spot in the quarterfinals. Brian Johnson, of Coral Springs, a 2005 Match Play semifinalist, defeated Michael Hirsch, of Orlando, 1 up in the first round and faces Lance Capozzoli, of Ocoee, in the round of 16. The current Country Club of Ocala Club Champion Brent Dorman won his first match versus Takeshi Fuchigami, of Tampa. Judson Eustaquio, of Lake Worth, the 2004 Boys Junior Champion, won his match 2 and 1 while the 2005 Boys Junior Champion Chappell Brown, of West Palm Beach, fell to Darin Green, of Brandon. Bryce Voisin, of Orlando, upset Paul Melson, of Plantation, in the first round 3 and 2. Melson was co-medalist of the seeding round after shooting a 4-under par 68. All quarterfinal pairings in the Championship flight will be set after the Friday afternoon round of 16 matches are complete.

In the first flight, 16th seed Doug Snoap, of Apopka, upset top seed Jim Hammons, of Port Orange, in the first round 1 up. All top seeds in the second, third and fourth flights have advanced to the quarters in their respective flights.

The Match Play Championship takes a field of 96 players to make up five flights. All players were guaranteed an 18-hole seeding round and at least one round of match play. After the seeding round, the field was broken into a Championship flight of 32 players and four additional flights of 16 players. A winner will be decided in each of the five flights.

All non-exempt competitors played an 18-hole stroke play seeding round on Thursday, August 10 to determine their flights. Players earned exempt status by one of three categories, 2005 Mid-Amateur Champion, 2006 State Amateur Champion or 2005 Match Play Semifinalists. All five flights began the match play competition on Friday, August 11 with the Championship flight also playing in the afternoon. All flights will play two matches on Saturday, August 12 with the finals on the morning of Sunday, August 13.

ABOUT THE Florida Amateur Match Play

Prequalifying to determine a championship field of 64 players. 18 holes of stroke play to determine seeding for the match play bracket. Open to male amateur golfers with a valid USGA handicap index not exceeding 11.4. Must be a member of the FSGA.
