Scott Harvey leads early at South American Amateur

LIMA, Peru — One of only two Americans in the 68-man, South American Amateur Championship field is 36-year-old Scott Harvey, reigning U.S. Mid-Amateur champion.

On Thursday at Lima Golf Club in Peru's capital city, Harvey carded a six-under 66, and leads Juan Alvarez of Uruguay and Marcos Montenegro of Argentina by a shot.

The 2013 Mid-Amateur champion, Mike McCoy of Iowa, is also in the field for this 72-hole event. He shot 74 and is in a tie for 29th place.

Andre Tourinho, the Brazilian who tied for third at last week's inaugural Latin America Amateur, is three back in fourth place after a 69.

Other notable players include Chile's Joaquin Niemann (71), Northern Ireland's Chris Selfridge (73), and No. 3 ranked amateur in the world, Ashley Chesters of England (74).
