Florida State Senior Match Play: Matches Underway
TARPON SPRINGS, FLORIDA (July 16, 2006) --After an 18-hole seeding round, the flights are now complete for the inaugural Senior Amateur Match Play Championship. Matches will begin on Monday, July 17 and continue through Thursday, July 20 at Cypress Run Golf Club in Tarpon Springs.

The 2006 Senior Amateur Champion Ron Cleland topped the seeding round shooting a 2-under par 70. Cleland, of Naples, earns the number one seed in the Championship flight and will face Denny Rouse in the first round. Three fellow Senior Amateur Champions are also in the Championship flight. Edward Craig, from Orlando, the 2005 Senior Amateur Champion, recorded a 74 for the seventh seed as Bruce Scamehorn, of Winter Haven, the 2004 Senior Amateur Champion, shot a 71 in the seeding round to be the second seed. Two-time Senior Amateur Champion Joseph Cristillo, of Crystal River, secured the 11th seed posting a 75 in the seeding round. The Championship flight of 32 begins matches at 7:30 am on Monday, July 17 with a second match that afternoon. Two other Senior Division flights of 16 competitors will play one round on Monday, July 17.

Max Mathews, of Andalusia, fired a 73 to secure the number one seed in the Super Senior Division. Mathews will play Bill Morton in the first round. The

Super Senior Division of 16 begins match play at 8:50 am on Monday, July 17.

To be eligible, players must have reached 55 years of age by July 16, 2006. All players traveling to Cypress Run Golf Club are guaranteed an 18-hole seeding round and at least one round of match play. After the 18-hole seeding round, the field of 80 (64 Seniors and 16 Super-Seniors) will be seeded into a Senior Division Championship flight of 32 players and two additional flights of 16 players. Also, the 16 Super-Seniors will be seeded into a Super-Senior Championship flight. Ultimately, there will be a Senior Amateur Match Play Champion and a Super-Senior Amateur Match Play Champion from each Championship flight.

Cypress Run is set among beautifully wooded terrain and is considered one of the best designed and maintained courses in the Tampa Bay area. The fairways are wide, but lined with towering cypress and oak trees. The signature hole is #18, a 433-yard, par 4, featuring a dogleg right fairway and a green that is guarded in front by Hollins Creek.

ABOUT THE Florida Senior Match Play

The Senior Championship is for those individuals over the age of 55. Two age divisions, 55-64 and 65 and over, will compete with one round of stroke play qualifying followed by single elimination match play rounds to determine winners in each division.
