Sherlin leads with 65 at Alabama Mid-Amateur
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Sept. 19, 2014) — Montgomery resident Stan Sherlin leads the 26th Alabama State Mid-Amateur Championship at Montgomery Country Club after an opening round of 65, five-under-par.

This 54-hole championship is conducted at stroke play by the Alabama Golf Association and will conclude on Sunday.

Sherlin has won this championship twice before, in 1997 and 1998, as well as both the State Four-Ball (with John Coles III) and the State Senior Four Ball (with Joey Holley).

Friday he made seven birdies (on holes 1, 3, 8, 12, 15, 17 and 18) against bogeys on holes 6 and 16 over the challenging par 70 layout.

Sherlin has a three-shot lead over Scottsboro’s Robson Copenhaver, with defending champion Torrie Coghlin of Irondale and Decatur’s Matthew Gourgeot the only other players to break par, shooting 69.
