Colorado Match Play Championship
CASTLE ROCK, CO (July 14, 2006) -- CSU Player Aaron Weston (Meridian GC) defeated fellow CSU Teammate Zen Brown (Indian Tree GC) 2 and 1 in the 36-hole final match to win the 106th CGA Match Play Championship at Plum Creek Golf and Country Club. For Weston, who will play for CSU this fall in his fifth year at the university, this was the biggest win of his young career.
The match itself was ranked a “10” By CGA Executive Director Ed Mate. Weston only took a 2 up lead going into the second 18 holes of the match despite having played the first 18 three-under par. Weston extended his lead to 3 up on the 23rd hole with a birdie, only to have Brown answer with a birdie on the 24th hole to pull it back to a 2-hole deficit. On the very next hole (par-3 7th), Weston made birdie again to regain his 3 up lead. Weston birdied the next hole (Par-5 8th), but lost the hole to Brown’s eagle which pulled him back within 2 holes. Weston proceeded to birdie the next hole (his third birdie in a row, fourth in five holes) to regain a 3 up lead. Brown made a 20-foot birdie putt on the 29th hole, only to have Weston drop a 15-foot birdie on top of it to halve the hole. Weston halved the following three holes with clutch par putts ranging from five to 15 feet, then Brown birdied the 33rd hole (par-5 15th) to cut the lead to 2 holes. Weston held that lead until the match ended 2 and 1 on the 35th hole (par-3 17th) when Brown conceded Weston’s par to halve the hole. Weston had played the final 16 holes bogey-free with five birdies and had only managed to hold the 2 up lead he had taken into the final 18 holes of this remarkable match.
Weston’s name will join the likes of Babe Lind, Steve Jones, Brandt Jobe and Hale Irwin on the Richard C. Campbell trophy, which will reside at Meridian Golf Club for the following year.
Brown, who won the 2005 CGA Public Links and was the USGA medalist at the U.S. Open Local Qualifier at Lone Tree Golf Club & Hotel earlier this year, will be a sophomore at CSU this fall.

ABOUT THE Colorado Match Play
The CGA Match Play Championship will be played
using the PGA TOUR style match play Pod
Play system at gross scoring. This means that any
player who qualifies for the
championship will be guaranteed at least three (3)
matches in the championship at
CommonGround Golf Course. After each player is
ranked (see below), all players will be
distributed into their pod with three (3) other
players. This will yield 16 pods of four (4)
players. Each player will play all three other players
in their pod (see schedule below). The
winner of each pod will advance to the Round of 16
and a single elimination knockout
round will be played at CommonGround Golf Course.
The top 8 players will advance to
complete the championship at Colorado Golf Club in
a single elimination bracket.
Player Seeding: All 64 players will be ranked 1 – 64.
The defending champion will be
ranked #1. Exempt players will be ranked next based
on their 2020 CGA Player of the Year
points standings. The rest of the field of 64 will be
made from qualifying players that came
from an off-site qualifier. Qualifying players will be
ranked in order of their qualifying score
at their given site.
Pod Assignments/Seeding: The pods will follow the
PGA TOUR style of randomized drawing.
Once players have been seeded 1 - 64, players will
be drawn at random so that each pod
will consist of a player ranked 1 - 16 (Player 1), 17 -
32 (Player 2), 33 - 48 (Player 3) and
49 - 64 (Player 4).
Pod Play Scoring: There will be no extra holes during
the pod play portion of matches.
Scoring during pod play will be as follows: Match
Won – 1 point | Match Tied – ½ point |
Match Lost – 0 Points.
Note: If there is a tie for the pod winner, a sudden
death playoff will determine the person
advancing from that pod.
