Weber gets three-stroke win at Illinois Amateur Invitational
By Chad Arsich, Local Amateur GolfCHANNAHON, Ill. (August 10, 2014) – Mother Nature brought two great days of weather for the playing of the Illinois Amateur Invitational at Heritage Bluffs Golf Club in Channahon, IL.
The 4th Illinois Amateur Invitational had another strong field in 2014 including talented college, mid-amateur, and senior players. Heading into the final round, the last group featured 18-year-old Matthew Weber, who will be playing at Indiana University in the fall, Scott Smith, 21, who is currently a senior playing at Northwestern University, and 54-year-old Tom Fox of Palos Heights, Ill.
Holding a one-shot lead over Smith and Fox teeing off Sunday, Weber made quick work to extend his lead on the front nine, besting both Smith’s 37 and Fox’s 36 with a three-under par 33. Weber took a five-shot lead headed into the back nine.
On the back, Fox was not able to capitalize as he made zero birdies and shot a three-over 39. Smith started began the back with a birdie and worked hard to put pressure on Weber, finishing with a two-under 34.
Even with Scott’s strong finish, it was not enough to overcome the five-shot advantage of Weber, who was really playing well. Weber was able to cruise home to victory capping off the round with a birdie on the tough 18th. With the birdie came a pump of the fist and a smile out of the 18-year-old with the victory.
