WALLACE, N.C. (August 6, 2014) — The East Coast Amateur features a 36-hole first day as players endure the grueling east coast summer heat for more than nine hours at River Landing Country Club. Joseph Cansler, a homeschooled amateur golfer, shot consecutive under-par rounds to take a four-shot advantage into Thursday's final round.

Cansler, whose second-round 67 is the lowest score in the tournament so far, didn't make a birdie in his opening-round 71, instead making 16 pars, a bogey, and an eagle. His second 18, however, featured seven birdies and two bogeys.

Recent University of North Carolina graduate Michael McGowan is in second place after rounds of 69 and 73. He along with Paul Fitzgerald of Erskine College lead after the first 18 with their 69s. However, Fitzgerald faltered in the afternoon, shooting 83.
