PALM HARBOR, Fla. (July 8, 2006) -– Doug Snoap and Robert Parker fired a 5-under par 66 as did Matthew Anderson and Scott Kennedy to share a two-stroke lead in the 57th Florida State Four-Ball Championship at the Westin Innisbrook Golf Resort’s Cooperhead Course in Palm Harbor. The 2006 Championship continues with the final round on Sunday, July 9 with tee-times beginning at 8:00 am.
Doug Snoap, of Apopka, and two-time Public Links Champion Robert Parker, of Sanford, and the team of Matthew Anderson, of Tampa, and Scott Kennedy, of Pompano Beach, each posted a 66 in the first round to top the field of 52 teams heading into the final round. Seven teams are two strokes back from the leading groups at 68 including the defending champions Andy Purnell, of St. Augustine, and Steve Carter, from Jacksonville. The 1995 Four-Ball Champions Frank Strafaci, of Davie, and Rick Woulfe, of Fort Lauderdale, also are vying for a second title after shooting a 68. The pair from South Florida recently won their third four-ball event as partners at the Mid-Amateur Four-Ball South. The 2004 Champions Bret Voisin, of Orlando, and Jeff Robinson, of Sanford, sit three strokes back shooting a 69 tied with six other teams.
From June 14-28, teams attempted to advance to the Championship through one of eight qualifying tournaments. In qualifying, teams of two played 18 holes of four-ball stroke play in hopes of advancing to the Championship. The Championship also features exempt teams who earned exempt status through different categories. In the Championship, participants play 36 holes of four-ball stroke play in the two-day event. In four-ball stroke play, two competitors play as partners, each playing his own ball. The lower score of the partners is the score for the hole. The Championship is played on the Copperhead Course, home of the PGA Tour’s Chrysler Championship. Last year at Grand Cypress Golf Club in Orlando, Steve Carter and Andy Purnell, of Jacksonville, set a new tournament record shooting a 64-59—123.
