Metropolitan Golf Association (MGA) Senior Amateur Championship
Darien, CT… Steven Rose of Fresh Meadow won his second MGA Senior Amateur Championship in three years by defeating 2004 CSGA Senior Amateur Champion Gene Ryzewicz on the 4th playoff hole at the 78th MGA Senior Amateur Championship at Woodway Country Club in Darien, CT. Tied for the lead heading into today’s action, both players struggled with 76 in second day action.

Ryzewicz forced the playoff with a clutch up and down par save on the 18th green hitting a savvy bump and run shot from a tight lie left of the green to five feet, converting the ensuing par putt. After three holes were halved, Rose clinched the victory on the fourth playoff hole with a birdie 2 on the par three ninth.

Rose’s victory comes two years after his last MGA title, having won the 2003 Senior Amateur Championship at Arcola Country Club in Paramus, NJ.

Television personality Maury Povich of Hollywood GC, who started the day one shot back after an opening first round 71, finished in 6th place after shooting 80.

Defending champion Douglas Vergith of St. George’s, had a very respectable showing following yesterday’s 74 with a second round 78, finishing in tied for 7th place.

The low round of the day went to Gerry Barnett of Manasquan River who’s one over par 72 vaulted him into third place.

The starting field of 191 was cut to 21 players (top 20 and ties) who managed 76 or better in today’s first round.
