Joe Leavitt wins New Hampshire State Amateur
From the New Hampshire Golf Association
Goffstown, New Hampshire (July 19, 2014) - Joe Leavitt of Atkinson Resort & CC capped off a dominate week with a 6 & 4 36-hole match play victory over Damon Salo in the 111th New Hampshire Amateur Championship.
Leavitt was in control early as he won the first hole with an eagle three to Salo's birdie. While Salo played solid golf for most of the morning round, Leavitt was simply too good as his lead ballooned to 6 up after the first 18-hole round. The 2012 New Hampshire Amateur Champion shot 65 and it seemed the title was his to lose.
Salo did battle back early the final 18 holes. The two halved the first seven holes of the afternoon match, but Salo won the 8th and 10th hole to get the match to 4 down. But Leavitt wouldn't be denied. He won the 12th with a beautiful birdie and after a halve on #13, Salo put his tee shot on the par-5 14th out of bounds. From there it was a mere formality and Salo conceded the match before either player even putted out.
The victory was Leavitt's 3rd NHGA win of the year after he previously won the Tournament of Club Champions and Player's Invitational. The victory put him in extremely elite company as one of only a handful of men that have won New Hampshire's State Championship multiple times.
