John Kelly defeats Doug Clapp for Mass. Amateur title
SALEM, Mass. (July 19, 2014) -- John Kelly defeated Doug Clapp in the championship match of the 106th Massachusetts Amateur Championship Saturday, winning 3 and 2 at Kernwood Country Club.
Kelly, who plays out of Twin Hills Country Club in Longmeadow, Mass., went on a tear during the morning round, going 5-up through 11 holes before finishing the first 18 4-up.
Clapp would battle well, though, in the afternoon 18. He took four holes back from Kelly early on before cutting the deficit to just 1-down.
Kelly, however, would go on to win the 28th and 31st holes before putting it away on the 34th hole of the planned 36-hole match.
To reach Saturday's finale at historic Kernwood, Kelly knocked off Matt Parziale, a reinstated former professional while Clapp topped Jake Shuman.
