Abbett earns medalist honors at Virginia Super Senior
KILMARNOCK –– Northern Virginian Jon Abbett of McLean earned medalist honors in the 65-69 age division with a two-round total of 6-under 138 as stroke play qualifying concluded today at the 20th Virginia State Golf Association Super Senior Amateur Championship being conducted at Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club.

Abbett returned 2-under 70 on the second day to earn low qualifying honors for match play which begins on Thursday. He had five birdies against a single bogey in Tuesday’s first round action and his strong play continued on day two, accounting for four birdies against two bogeys.

Tony Aguiar, of Glen Allen, rebounded from a day one 74 to post a second round best 3-under 69. He earned second low qualifying honors for match play at 1-under 143. Alexandria’s Bill Engel (71-74)and former VSGA Senior Amateur champion John Cuomo of Richmond (73-72) each finished stroke play qualifying at 1-over 145 to claim the three and four seeds, respectively. Dick Blackburn of Alexandria posted a 1-under 71 and was the fifth low qualifier for match play with a total at 4-over 148.

In the 70-74 age bracket, Virginia Beach’s George Owens,who opened with 1-under 71, carded a second day 70 to claim qualifying medalist honors in the division (3-under 141).

McLean’s David Stewart and Arlington’s Peter Jacobi each fired a 5-under 67 in the second round and completed qualifying at 2-under 142 to secure the second and third seeds, respectively. Walter Anderson (Afton) and Richmond’s Thomas Vogt round out the top five seeds after both competitors finished at 2-over 146.

In the 75 and over category, Harry Cain of Williamsburg posted a second round 1-over-par 73, accounting for the low score in the age division; he finished qualifying at 6-over 150.

Gloucester’s Wayne Jackson (8-over 152), James Naylor of Lexington (11-over 155) and Wilton Burgess of Lynchburg (15-over 159) were the other match play qualifiers in the age bracket.

Following Wednesday’s second round of stroke play qualifying, eight players qualified for the match play field in both the 65-69 and 70-74 age divisions, while four players made match play in the 75 and over division.

Match play qualifiers in the 65-69 and 70-74 age groups will play quarterfinal and semifinal round matches on Thursday, July 10, followed by final round matches on Friday, July 11. Golfers making match play in the 75 and over division will play one match on Thursday and the final on Friday. Players will only compete with those in their age group.

ABOUT THE Virginia Mid-Senior & Super Senior

36 holes of stroke play qualifying (18 holes per day); the low 8 players advance to match play. The Mid-Senior field is for players aged 60-64, and the Super Senior field is divided into three age groups (65+, 70+ and 75+). Players will only compete against those in their age group. Open to VSGA members who hold an active GHIN number issued by a licensed VSGA Member Club in good standing.
