YARMOUTH, Me. (July 8, 2014) -- Drew Powell and Joe Walp each fired an impressive two-under-par 70 in the first round of Tuesday's Maine Amateur Championship currently being contested at the very difficult and challenging Woodlands Club in Falmouth.
That makes the average age of the first round leaders 18 -- Falmouth's Walp is just 20 and Penobscot Valley's Powell is only 16.
Coming into the tournament, the competitors knew The Woodlands would be a true test of golf. But five inches of rain in the past week makes the 6,648-yard course's effective playing length closer to 7,000 yards. And the scores showed it. The average score on the par 72 track was 82.6.
Matt Greenleaf from Sable Oaks was the only other player under par at 71 while three players -- Keith Patterson, Joe Baker and Andrew Slattery were even par 72.
Three time winner Ricky Jones is five back at 75, as is former winner Eric Crouse. Ron Brown, who won this even the only other time it was hosted at The Woodlands finished at 82, making tomorrow moving day for him as the projected cut will be about 160-161. The field is cut to 40 players and ties after the second round, then repaired by score with the leaders going out last in Thursday's final round.
