VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, N.C. (July 2, 2014) -- Penn State's J.D. Dornes fired a second-round 67 to surge into a tie at the top of the leaderboard Wednesday at the North & South Amateur.

Playing Pinehurst No. 8, Dornes followed his first-round 72 with the round of the day and shares the lead with USC's Rico Hoey entering Thursday's final round of stroke-play qualifying before the 16-player match play event begins.

Hoey, who enjoyed a stellar freshman season for the Trojans and recently competed at the Palmer Cup, shot 71 to go along with his opening 68 and is tied alongside Dornes.

First-round leader Will Seger, who opened play with a red-hot 65 on Tuesday shot 76 and slipped to a tie for fourth place.

Christopher Petefish, a rising freshman at Georgia Tech, shot a second straight 70 and is alone in third place.

McCormick Clouser of Ball State, who started the day tied for second place, shot 75 and slipped a few places down to a tie for eighth place.

With the top 16 stroke play finishers moving on to match play at the Pinehurst resort in the prestigious competition, Thursday is vital for players in the top third of the leaderboard.

Notable players hoping to continue their upward trends and reach match play include: Recent Monroe Invitational champion Taylor Pendrith, Georig's Michael Cromie, TCU's Chelso Barrett and defending champion Andrew Dorn.
