Florida State Amateur: Figueroa leads entering final round
VERO BEACH, Fla. (June 21, 2014) -- Edward Figueroa will take a three stroke lead into the final round of play in the 97th Florida State Amateur Championship at Quail Valley Golf Club, in Vero Beach. The Championship concludes with the final round on Sunday, June 22.

After 54-holes of play, Edward Figueroa, of Naples, stands alone atop the leaderboard with a total of 9-under par. After rounds of 66-71, Figueroa would only trail the leader by 2 shots entering his round on Saturday. Playing in the final group, Figueroa would play a solid front nine making eight pars to go along with is birdie on the 6th hole, to turn at one-under par 35. Figueroa would play his next six holes in even par, without making a par. Birdies on 11, 12, and 14 evened out his bogeys on 10, 13 and 15. After two quality shots on the 18th hole, Figueroa would make a nice birdie to cap off his round of two-under par 70. The past Florida Junior Tour Champion will be looking to capture his first State Championship on Sunday.

Chase Cutshall, of West Melbourne, and Gabriel Lench, of Lake Mary, are tied for second place with a total of six-under par 210, and are only three shots behind Figueroa. Cutshall made one of the biggest moves of the day, posting a bogey free round of 67. Lench, the 36-hole leader, could never get it going on Saturday, but managed a round of three-over par 75 to still be in contention. R J Nakashian, of Palm Beach Gardens, is currently in fourth place after rounds of 70-67-75.

Started in 1914, the Florida Amateur Championship is the oldest continuous sporting event in the state as well as the largest amateur event in Florida. Past Amateur champions include Bob Murphy, Jerry Pate, and PGA Tour players David Peoples, Chris Couch, and Barry Cheesman.
