North Carolina Amateur: Martin becomes youngest winner
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (June 8, 2014) -- Josh Martin of Pinehurst fired a final-round 4-under 67 to win the 2014 North Carolina State Amateur championship at Carolina Golf Club.
Martin, an incoming freshman at UNC, became the youngest champion in the tournament's 54-year history.
“It means a lot seeing those great champions on the trophy; it’s an honor to be on there too,” Martin told the Carolinas Golf Association. In addition to being the youngest North Carolina Amateur champion, his winning score of fourteen-under par 270 is the second-best in the event’s history.
Charlotte's Bailey Patrick, also a golfer at UNC, led entering the final round and played well, entering the back nine with a three-shot lead over his soon-to-be teammate. After the turn, though, Martin went on a tear and ultimately took over the lead on No. 15.
