Hornblower Memorial: Hartford's Betts wins by 1
PLYMOUTH, Mass. (May 31, 2014) -- University of Hartford golfer William Betts shot rounds of 72-71 to win by a shot at the 2014 Hornblower Memorial at Plymouth Country Club.
Betts rallied from a two-shot deficit to edge Nick McLaughlin, a former Massachusetts prep star and current golfer at the University of Virginia.
McLaughlin's first-round 70 gave him the overnight lead but Betts' 71 on the par 69 Donald Ross design was enough to clinch him the title in the ever-improving event.
Notable Massachusetts mid-amateur Doug Clapp shot a final-round 69 to climb the leaderboard and take a tie for third place alongside Ben Spitz, Herbie Aikens and former champion Matt Parziale, a reinstated amateur.
The Hornblower Memorial is one of the New England region's top amateur events. The field features many of the area's top collegiate and mid-amateur stars and is hosting a senior event for the first time in event history this August.
