TOLUCA LAKE, CA (April 25, 2014) -- The Kelly Cup field includes some of the best players in Southern California, and in Friday's first round only one of them, David Ober, was able to break par. He posted a 1-under 69.
Ober, who plays out of Temecula's Bear Creek GC, played steady golf on a 6714 yard layout that for many of the players is as close to a US Open setup as they see.
He was pleased with the result.
"You have to think your way around here and today this was my best round at Lakeside mentally," said Ober.
The unique tournament format of the Kelly Cup puts players in flights by handicap. But any player can emerge as one of the top 15 who makes the Sunday cut in this 54-hole event, since all at the same tees.
And they all enjoy playing one of the traditionally fun clubs which Hollywood celebrities like Justin Timberlake, George Lopez, and Joe Pesci call home.
The conditions this year are the best ever.
Ober nailed it when he said,
"I love the club, the people, the firmness of the greens, and everything about the tournament. "
