New Zealand Amateur: Riordan takes top seed
NELSON, New Zealand (April 24, 2014) -- Local favorite Blair Riordan continued his impressive play Thursday, securing medalist honors at the 2014 New Zealand Amateur at Nelson Golf Club.
Riordan will be the No. 1 seed when the match play portion of the event kicks off Friday.
Riordan backed up his first-round 64 with a 67 on Thursday, finishing at 11-under and an impressive six-shot win.
Compton Pikari shot a final-round 72 to take solo second and the no. 2 seed.
Four players Jason Gulasekharam (70), Australian Amateur Champion Tae Koh (68), defending NZ Amateur champion Kadin Neho (66) and Wellington’s Marc Jennings (70) all finished in a share of third place to earn favorable draws.
“It is really pleasing to be in this position,” said Riordan.
Riordan knows all too well that his opponents would love to knock out the No.1 seed on day one.
“It seems to happen in pretty much every match play event we play, the guy who finishes top qualifier gets knocked out early. I am just going to go and do what I do and if someone beats me they beat me otherwise they are going to have a pretty hard time.”
