Texas North Senior: Penn, Palmer win titles
LANTANA, Texas (April 23, 2014) – Chuck Palmer and Gary Penn led wire-to-wire in their respective divisions to win the 2014 North Senior
Amateur Championship presented by UST Mamiya at Lantana Golf Club. Palmer had a tournament total of even-par 144 to win the Senior
division by one shot. Penn cruised to victory in the Super Senior division, winning by five shots.
Palmer carded a final-round 75 on the par-72 Lantana Golf Club. He only had two birdies in the second round, and bogeyed No’s. 16 and 17
before needing a par on the final hole to win. He made par and won by one shot over Dave Davis of Saginaw. Davis’ even-par 72 final round
was the low round of the day in the Senior division. Mike Peck, Hollis Sullivan, and Charlie Garza finished three shots behind Palmer in a tie
for third place.
Penn, of Fort Worth, had two birdies on his back nine en route to his 4-over-par 76. The windy conditions made the course play a little
tougher, but his 76 was enough to win by five shots over Doug Chandler of Lufkin and Gary Kirwan of McKinney. Michael Hastings fired an
even-par 72 final round to card the low round of the day in the Super Senior division and finished tied for fifth with Sandy Hammett.
The North Regional events will take a little break for the summer before concluding with the North Amateur Championship August 8-10 at
Watter’s Creek Golf Course in Allen. The TGA would like to thank Lantana Golf Club and the North Regional events’ sponsor, UST Mamiya for
their hospitality and support of amateur golf.
