WEST POINT, Miss. (April 13, 2014) -- Mike Thompson, of Belden, kept his lead in the Super Senior Division and finished strong to round out the final round. Thompson posted an easy seventy-five, to keep him four strokes ahead of the first round leader, Ed Barnett. Barnett, of Memphis, finished seven over par tournament total.
Following the awards presentation in the Senior Division, it was brought to the attention of the Rules Committee that the crowned Champion had signed for an incorrect scorecard. Mr. Sanford noticed after he had left the course that it was posted incorrectly and he returned to Old Waverly to give back his winnings. This was the act of a true gentleman and honest golfer. We appreciate his honesty and wish him the best in the next amateur tournament. The Senior Title was then awarded to Chris Mills, of Tupelo, as he posted the low round of seventy in the final day. Mills shaved off nine strokes from his second round posting of seventy-nine. Following Mills, in second place was Robert Willis, of Grenada. Willis finished six over par bringing him within two strokes of the lead.
Steve Wilson held onto his lead despite a hard final round. Wilson has been playing well this Spring and continued to grind Sunday to stay on top. The final leaderboard had Wilson at two-under par and Tyler Hitchner one stroke behind. Tied for third in the Championship flight was Damon Palmer and Rickey Riley. Riley had a memorable round as this was his fiftieth birthday. Congratulations and thank you to all the competitors.
