Georgia Four-Ball: Hogan/Spitalny win 4-team playoff
ALBANY, Ga. (March 30, 2014) -- A team from
Athens, Tyler Hogan and Phil Spitalny, posted rounds
of 71-70, totaling 3-under-par 141, and won the 26th
annual Georgia Four-Ball Tournament after surviving a
six-hole playoff with three other teams. This GSGA
season-opening competition took place at both
Stonebridge Golf and Country Club and Doublegate
Country Club, March 28-30.
Competing at Stonebridge Golf and Country Club, four
teams finished regulation tied at 3-under-par 141 at
the top of the leaderboard: Hogan and Spitalny; Chad
Branton of Cartersville and Steve Stewart of
Adairsville (71-70); David Matthews and Doug
Rayford, both of Valdosta (70-71); and Rick Dubois
and David Maddox, both of McDonough (69-72). Over
the course of six playoff holes, Hogan and Spitalny
were left standing to claim the trophy, while Branton
and Stewart earned runner-up honors. Dubois and
Maddox finished third overall. Matthews and Rayford,
who won this competition in 2011, finished fourth
overall.
Two teams tied for fifth overall at 1-under-par 143,
including the defending champions Gary Bernson of
Atlanta and Scott Resseguie of Augusta (74-69), and
Don Marsh of Johns Creek and Shad Fleeman of
Cumming (73-70). Hal Lamb of Calhoun and Rick
Brown of Adairsville (72-72) tied for seventh overall
at even-par 144 along with Brent Harper of Tifton
and Jeff Thorne of Sylvester (74-70). Rounding out
the top 10 overall include two teams at 1-over-par
145: Chad Davis of Social Circle and Frank Webster of
Conyers (77-68) and Bob Nance and Mike Nance,
both of Calhoun (72-73).
Tom Olberding of St. Simons Island and Micah Smith
of Canton won the fourth flight at 2-under-par 142
(72-70). The fifth flight was taken by Clint Carter of
Atlanta and Bob Wilson of Lawrenceville at 1-under-
par 143 (74-69). Zane Cooper of Fayetteville and
Larry Saheim of Peachtree City teamed up to win
flight six at 2-over-par 146 (77-69). Flight seven was
won by Steve Gurley of Macon and John Sink of
Juliette at 6-over-par 150 (75-75).
Due to heavy rains on Friday and severe weather on
Saturday in the Albany area, round two of the
Georgia Four-Ball Tournament was moved to Sunday.
The 36-hole scores for all flights are considered final.
Entries were open to two-man teams of male amateur
golfers who belong to a GSGA member club and have
combined USGA Handicap Indexes of 4.0 and above
and a maximum differential of six strokes. Of the 94
total teams, 82 were determined by lottery, three
spots were reserved for each host club and one spot
was reserved for each of the previous year's flight
winners.

The Georgia Four-Ball Tournament, held annually
since 1989, is open
to male amateur golfers who are GSGA members
and are residents of
Georgia. The format is four-ball stroke play.

amateur golfers who have combined USGA
Handicap Indexes of 4.0 and above and a
maximum differential of 6 strokes
Field: 96 teams -- 82 teams determined by
lottery, three spots reserved for each host
club and one spot reserved for each of the
previous year's flight winners
