Michigan wins Big 10 Match Play Championship
BRADENTON, Fla. (Feb. 16, 2014) -- With its final match with Purdue tied at 2-2-1, the Michigan men’s golf team won a sudden-death playoff to claim its first Big Ten Match Play Championship on Saturday at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla. The two-day event featured all 12 Big Ten squads, with the Wolverines posting an 11-7-2 record during the competition.
Michigan defeated Michigan State 3-2-0 in the first round, posted a 3-2-0 win over Illinois in the quarterfinals and followed with a 3-1-1 triumph over Iowa in the semifinals to advance to the championship round.
The Boilermakers placed second at the match play event, Northwestern finished third, the Hawkeyes were fourth and Minnesota rounded out the top five in the final team standings.
