DALLAS, TX (June 9, 2006)--Paul Haley of Dallas is very comfortable on the Dallas Country Club golf course, site of the 2006 Texas State Amateur Championship. He tied the low score of the tournament with a 64 in Saturday’s third round and opened up a four shot lead over three other players going into the final round. Haley got off to a fast start with birdies on holes 2, 3, 4, & 6, and capped off a bogey free round with a three foot birdie putt on 18. His eight under par total leaves him four ahead of a couple of other teenagers - Rob Ormand of Austin and Will Griffin of San Antonio - and veteran Terrence Miskell of New Braunfels.

“I play this golf course a lot and have a lot of experience here,” Haley said of Dallas Country Club. “I think it fits my game really well because you have to hit it straight and make some putts.” He did just that in the third round, missing only two fairways and three greens, and saving par with clutch putts when he did miss a green. Haley is heading to Georgia Tech to play on the golf team there in a couple of months.

The players closest to Haley all got there in very different manners. Ormand and Griffin are both high school students, while Miskell is 38 and easily the veteran among the leaders. Ormand has been very consistent with opening rounds of 69-69 to go with his third round 68. Griffin had an interesting third round of 66 after back to back even par 70’s. His first shot of the day ended up out of bounds and he made double bogey, but battled back for his four under round to end up tied for second. Miskell has been up and down over the first three rounds, posting scores of 67-73-66 to move into the three way tie for second.

Cody Gribble of Dallas, the youngest player in the field at 15 and the opening round leader, hung tough in the third round with an even par 70 to finish 54 holes at three under par and in a tie for fifth with John McClure of Dallas. McClure had it going in the third round, including an eagle three on the par five 11th hole, but he bogeyed two of the last three holes to end up with a 68.

Final round action gets under way at Dallas Country Club at 8:00 AM Sunday, with the leaders scheduled to tee off at 11:30.
