PINEHURST, NC (June 9, 2006) -- Stacy Lewis and Taylor Leon have much in common. Stacy is from Houston, Texas, and Taylor is from Dallas, Texas. They both went out of state for college, Stacy will be a junior at the University of Arkansas and Taylor a sophomore at the University of Georgia. Both schools are in the Southeastern Conference. If today is any indication, that conference is in store for great golf. In a seesaw battle, Curtis Cup player Taylor Leon rallied to overcome Stacy Lewis 1 up at the 91st Women’s Southern Amateur Golf Championship on the Dogwood Course at the Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, NC.

Stacy and Taylor teed off this morning in the 36-hole final. Stacy bogeyed the first hole when she failed to get up and down. She then birdied the fourth hole to square the match. Taylor then birdied the par 4 sixth hole to regain her 1up lead through the front side. Both players birdied the 10th hole. Taylor then stuck her approach shot on number 11 to about 2 feet and converted the birdie putt to go two up.

On 12, Taylor three-putted for bogey to go back to one up. The turning point came on number 17 when Stacy sank a 12 foot downhill putt for birdie and Taylor failed to convert her birdie putt to square the match.

The afternoon round began like the morning when Taylor sank a 20 foot putt for birdie to go one up. Stacy rallied and made birdie on the par 3, 21st hole after she had stuck her tee shot to about 5 feet right of the hole. Taylor hit an errant tee shot which settled under a cedar tree on the 24th hole and conceded Stacy’s par which put Stacy in the lead for the first time in the match. Taylor executed a perilous up and down on hole 28 to halve the hole. On the 27th hole, Stacy putted out from the fringe for birdie to go 2 up as they started the last nine holes.

On the last nine holes, Taylor birdied the first hole but bogeyed the second. Stacy upped her lead to three up with a birdie on the 30th hole. Being three up with 5 holes to play the match seemed over but Taylor fired three birdies and an eagle to go one up with one to play. On the 35th hole, Stacy knocked it stiff to the flag for a kick in birdie and Taylor knocks an 80-yard wedge shot from the fairway for an eagle. Stacy then had a birdie putt on the 36th hole to tie the match but it slid by the hole.
