The 2nd annual Desert Putting Classic will be played at the SilverRock Resort in La Quinta,
Calif. Dec 7.
The event, which features 16 two-person teams in a best-ball, match-play format, is the second
iteration of the event in the Southern California desert. Tournament coordinator Fred Scherzer
originally put the event together in 1986 and during its first few years had as many as 64
teams competing with players including Fred Couples taking aim at the overall title and prize
money.
“It slowed down a bit,” Scherzer said. “But it was very successful.”
The current iteration is held on SilverRock’s large putting green and allows one professional per
team. There are numerous opportunities to win prize money in the championship and
consolation brackets.
The event is a friendly but serious competition and, much like originally designed by Scherzer
nearly 30 years ago, it provides golfers with the chance to test their strengths in a gross
competition without the worries of handicaps.
“We would hold events with all these phony handicaps,” Scherzer said. “And that’s why we
came up with the idea. We’ve had teams win this with a seven and a 14 handicap.”
