BRYAN, Texas (November 24, 2013) – In one of the closest competitions in the event’s nine year history, the South team retained the Jackie Burke Cup with a 25-23 victory at Traditions Club. They now lead the overall series 7-2.

The South team began the day up 13-11 after winning six matches, and halving one, during Saturday’s Foursome and Four-Ball play. Things went the North team’s way early Sunday morning as they took the first three singles matches. But their lead would not last as the South stormed back to win six of the last nine matches. Scott Williams of Cedar Park sealed the victory for the South with his 2-up victory over Sean Wilcox of Frisco.

Modeled after the Ryder Cup, the Jackie Burke Cup featured 12 players from north Texas competing against 12 players from south Texas in three forms of play: Foursomes (alternate shot), Four-Ball, and Singles. Players earned their way on to their respective Jackie Burke Cup team by virtue of their play throughout the year on the Legends Junior Tour and the Texas Junior Golf Alliance. Players were selected based on the Legends Junior Tour Player of the Year points list following the Texas Cup Invitational. The top eight boys from the Boys 15-18 division standings, top two boys from the Boys 14 & Under division and the top two girls from the Girls 12-18 division standings were represented on both the North and South teams.

For the first time in the event’s history, two former Legends Junior Tour players served as captains; James Ragan of Corpus Christi for the South and Nathan Weant of Hallsville for the North. Ragan competed for the South team in the 2010 Jackie Burke Cup while Weant was a three-time participant.

On Friday night, a banquet was held for participants, family and distinguished guests. In addition to both teams being introduced, year-end award winners were also recognized. The Players of the Year were Brandon Smith (Boys 15-18), Cole Hammer (Boys 14 & Under) and Hailee Cooper (Girls 12-18). Nick Bramlett of Houston was chosen as the Volunteer of the Year and D.J. Godoy won the James A. Ragan Sportsmanship Award.

The Legends Junior Tour would like to thank the staff, members and volunteers at Traditions Club for their support and hospitality. The 10th annual Jackie Burke Cup is scheduled for November 15-16 at Champions GC in Houston.
