Houston Am: Eagle in playoff wins it for Taylor
HOUSTON, Texas (Oct. 6, 2013) -- Jamey Taylor of Friendswood eagled the par-5 first playoff hole to defeat 17-year-old Mario Carmona in the 2013 Greater Houston Men's City Amateur Championship at Memorial Park Golf Course.
The 40 players who survived Saturday's 36-hole cut played 36 holes on Sunday. The morning third round was played in rainy conditions and the final round a under sunny sky. Taylor was the lone player in the third round to break par. His 70 vaulted him into a 4-shot lead with 18 holes to go.
For the record Taylor shot 70-69-70-76 and Carmona 69-69-76-71 to tie at 1-over-par 285. Taylor put his second shot on the par-5 first to within two-feet for a tap-in eagle. Carmona's second shot found the right front bunker. He blasted out to within 30 feet and two-putted for par.
The low 10 scorers received exemptions into the 2014 Championship: Kyle Maxwell Trevor Sauntry at 287; John Dowdall, James Bartell, A.J. Vesey and Matt Van Zandt at 288; Jake Greenspoon and Tyler Beck at 289.
More than 600 amateur golfers teed it up in six sold-out qualifying tournaments in an attempt to gain a position in the starting field of 144.
