Maine Mid-Am: Ricky Jones holds early lead
WELLS, Maine (Sept. 28, 2013) -- Ricky Jones is leading the way after the first round of the Maine Mid-Amateur Championship after shooting a round of one-under 69 at Old Marsh CC in Wells. Jones, this year’s Maine Amateur Champion and already a five-time winner of the Mid-Am, will look to hoist a trophy for the second straight Sunday, just a week after playing as the number one seed for the victorious Maine team in the annual Tri-State Matches.
Jones will carry a four-shot lead into tomorrow’s final round and will look to hold off Ryan Wingard (73) and three-time Mid-Amateur champion Joe Alvarez (74). In all, only ten players managed to break 80 on the challenging par 70 layout. Play will resume again at 7:30 tomorrow morning as players will look to chase down Jones to claim the last championship trophy of the season.
To add to the sub-plot of tomorrow's final round, players will also be playing for a handful of exemptions into next year's Maine Amateur Championship, to be held at the Woodlands Club. Every year the MSGA awards exemptions to the top three finishers from the Mid-Am not already exempt into the Amateur.
