HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Sept. 28, 2013) -- Torrie Coghlin continues to lead after two rounds of 25th State Mid-Amateur at Canebrake Club in Athens after rounds of 64-70–134 for a 10-under-par total.
Coghlin, who will play in the U.S. Mid-Amateur next week at the Country Club of Birmingham, is 28, caddies at Shoal Creek and lives in Irondale. He hails from Saskatoon in Saskatchewan in Canada and played golf for the University of Montevallo.
He leads two-time State Mid-Amateur and two-time State Amateur champion Will Swift of Vestavia Hills by two after Swift, a member at Hoover Country Club, shot 67-69–136. Matthew Gourgeot of Decatur and a former University of North Alabama golfer and 2011 State Mid-Amateur champion Matt Johnson of Dothan are a further shot back on seven-under.
“My round was frustrating early,” Coghlin said. “But I was happy with how I brought it back (with birdies on Nos. 14, 16 and 17). I didn’t have my best stuff and still shot two-under, so I’m pleased with that.
“It was a lot windier and I seemed to be in-between clubs a lot. When I finally relaxed and committed to my shots on the last five holes, it got a lot better.”
He talked about not have a set score in mind for Sunday’s final round.
“I just want to recapture the feelings I had during my first round and play well. I can’t worry about the championship and myself, I just need to play the golf course.
“If I relax and play my game, I’ll be fine.”
This Alabama Golf Association championship concludes on Sunday with the leaders teeing off at 9:00 off No. 1.
