NY Mid-Amateur: Walt McArdell leads
FAYETTEVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 27, 2013) -- At the conclusion of the first round of the 2013 N.Y.S. Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship, hosted by Onondaga Golf & Country Club, Walt McArdell holds the lead. McArdell, playing out of Radisson Greens Golf Club, posted a one-under par 70. Jim Scorse (Stafford Country Club), Marc Coleman (Nassau Players Club), and Peter Derrenbacker (Onondaga Golf & Country Club) sit one-stroke off the lead after all posting an even-par 71 in the first round.
Overall, McArdell played a balanced round of golf making six birdies that offset three bogies and a double bogey on the par-4 2nd.
McArdell credited his round to favorable positioning saying, “The greens were tough but I left myself in the right places most of the day.” He added, “I got up and down the few times that I had to.”
Looking forward to the second round of the Championship, McArdell will maintain a mindset similar to the first round.
“I hit the tee shot real well today so I’ll try to keep it in play again tomorrow,” said McArdell. “I’ll try to match these greens, they’re tough,” he added.
Defending Champion, Tim Spitz (Monroe Golf Club) posted a one-over par 72 in the first round. Spitz, currently two-strokes off the lead, finished tied for fifth with Bill Moore (Bellevue Country Club) and Luke Hobika (Cavalry Club).
There was a cut after the first round of the Championship; low 60 and ties made the cut. The cut fell at 79.
The second round will begin on Saturday at 8:00AM with players teeing off of #1.
