MURRIETA, CALIFORNIA (June 1, 2006) -- Cerritos High School senior Rory Hie fired a 6-under-par 66 and defeated Torrey Pines senior Jamie Lovemark in a playoff to capture the individual title while players from Cathedral Catholic High School of San Diego broke a tie with Torrey Pines High School and combined for a 3-over-par 363 to win the CIF-SCGA Southern Regional Championship today at The SCGA Golf Course in Murrieta.
Despite windy conditions, Hie, who signed to play with the University of Southern California's golf team, collected seven birdies and only one bogey on the 6,702-yard par-72 course, while future USC teammate and Torrey Pines senior Jamie Lovemark came away with eight birdies and two bogies. Hie was victorious on the par-4 ninth in the one-hole playoff, which he scored a four to Lovemark's five.
Murrieta Valley junior Rickie Fowler, who was the 2004 CIF-SCGA individual champion and the 2005 California Junior Amateur Champion, shot a 69 to tie for third place, along with Torrey Pines sophomore James Erkenbeck and Carlsbad sophomore Evan Emerick. Stockdale High School senior Bryan Hogan, Paso Robles junior Kevin Sepulveda (who fired a double eagle with his 3-wood on the par-4 fourth hole) and La Quinta senior Tom Whitney all tied sixth with 70 and won a four-person playoff to advance to the state championship. Three others tied for sixth as well, advancing to the championship by way of being members of winning teams.
After using the sixth players' scores to determine the winner, Cathedral Catholic collected a 439 to Torrey Pines' 444 to take the team championship. Damien High School of La Verne rounded out third with a 368.
The top six individuals not on a team and the top three teams advance to the CGA-CIF State Championship June 6 at Santa Maria CC.
