Nova Scotia Senior: Hebb wins 1st title
GREENWOOD, Nova Scotia (Aug. 9, 2013) -- Despite poor conditions in Greenwood on Friday heavy rains held off, and Mike Hebb held off all challengers en route to the NSGA Senior Men’s Championship. Hebb who is a member of Ashburn Golf Club was spectacular on a day that was the complete opposite, Hebb recorded three birdies, two bogeys and an eagle on the par five twelfth to propel him to victory. Entering the day one shot ahead of Gary Smith, and three strokes up Gerry MacMillan who both play from Paragon Golf and Country Club Hebb turned at the nine up two shots on both golfers. Gerry MacMillan did his best to catch Hebb, on the front nine MacMillan was nothing short of brilliant shooting a three under thirty three with birdies on number five, six, and nine. MacMillan then shot a three over on the back eliminating any chance of catching Hebb who notched a two under. Smith meanwhile was steady but could not match Hebb recording four bogeys and two birdies shooting a one over on both nines. Hebb was ecstatic with his win, he was congratulated by fellow players, and friends when he walked off eighteen green. Hebb has been golfing since he was a junior aged player, and has been a part of Nova Scotia teams that have competed at Nationals but this was his first provincial win “It feels good, especially playing with Gerry I’ve known him since we were juniors and his record speaks for itself, he’s a prince to play with and I was glad I could win with him playing with me” said Hebb. Today’s win continued an already impressive season for Hebb, he was runner up at the MCT Insurance Mid Amateur after going through hip surgery the year before. Because of work commitments both Hebb and MacMillan were unavailable to play at the Golf Canada Senior Championships. The Nova Scotia team will be comprised of Gary Smith, Tom Banks, John Archibald with Les Smith attending as an alternate. In other divisional play Sandy Herrick of Paragon took top honours in the super senior category besting hometown golfer Charlie Costin of Greenwood Golf Club. In division two John Brown of Riverside Golf Club near Saint John took top honours followed by McDonell of Oakfield. In the third division Curtis Duggan of Amherst bested Herrick by three strokes. And in the fourth division Frank Cotton of Eden bested Dale Jenkins and Ed Brown of Glen Lovat and Eagle Crest Golf Clubs.
