Colorado Stroke Play: 3 share lead on low day
DENVER, Colo. (Aug. 8, 2013) -- Six players broke par and four shot 3-under-par 67 to share the lead after Thursday's opening round of the 77th CGA Stroke Play Championship at Pinehurst Country Club in south Denver.
Parker Edens of Greeley Country Club, the Colorado State University golfer who placed second in the last two CGA Match Play Championships, is tied for the top spot with Brendan Connolly of the Ridge at Castle Pines North, Minkyu Jeon of the Meadows Golf Club and Nathaniel Goddard of Ptarmigan Country Club.
Jeon eagled the 613-yard fourth hole to provide a spark.
Also breaking par, and standing two out of the lead, are two former CGA champions, Derek Fribbs of Colorado National Golf Club (2013 Public Links and 2009 Junior Match Play) and Michael Harrington of Garden of the Gods Club (2009 Mid-Amateur).
Defending champion Steven Kupcho of CommonGround Golf Course was among five players who started with an even-par 70.
University of Colorado golfer David Oraee of Highland Hills Golf Course, winner of the CGA Match Play last month, opened with a 73.
The 72-hole tournament will continue through Sunday.
