WHITE SULPHER SPRINGS, W.V. (August 6, 2013) — Sam O’Dell is out to win the 2013 WV Amateur Championship.
This year looks like it’s turning out to be O’Dell’s best; first winning the WV Mid-Amateur earlier this year, a runner-up and low amateur performance at the WV Open, and now he sits a 8-under-par for the Amateur.
The Hurricane dentist was the only player during yesterday’s round to shoot an under-par score on The Greenbrier’s Old White TPC. As the contestants moved on to the resort’s Greenbrier course today, O’Dell set his sights on shooting a 65, just missing it by one with a 66.
Vienna’s Alan Cooke made a leap to second today, after shooting 5-under 67 on the course. The junior golfer made one eagle on a par five, 475-yard hole, as well as six birdies and three bogies. Cooke sits four strokes back from O’Dell for the third round, which will remain on the Greenbrier course.
Also a junior golfer, Wheeling’s Thadd Obecny, II is the only other player who is under par for the tournament and is also in the top three.
WV Golf Hall of Fame member and five-time Champion, Harold Payne, is currently low senior, shooting a 73 yesterday and a 79 for today’s round.
Following today’s round, the field will be cut to the low 40 and ties, which will be scores of 155 and lower.
